  • Keep control: Discuss your key distribution and what happens when a key is lost.

Fewer keys should mean clearer control.

Your master key system begins with a door list, not a large key ring. Write down who needs each room and which spaces must stay separate. A change key opens its assigned lock or group. A master key opens the planned group of locks. A grand master can sit above several groups. Your hierarchy should match real responsibilities, with broader access held by as few people as your work requires.

Key control is part of the system.

Your key plan is only useful while the issued keys are accounted for. Record who receives each key, which doors it opens and when it must be returned. Restricted keyways can add control over how copies are supplied, but ask about the exact key system and its rules. Compatible interchangeable cores can make future changes easier. Your existing cylinders need assessment before either option can be promised.

Plan for the key that does not come back.

You should ask what happens when a tenant, contractor or employee leaves with a key. Losing a broad-access master can affect more doors than losing a change key. Agree on your response before the system is installed. If you need individual access records or timed permissions, compare a mechanical plan with access control. Your choice should make ordinary arrivals and departures easier to manage, not harder to understand.

By the numbers

Good information.
Stronger decisions.

Your security plan starts with good news. Burglary has fallen for decades. The FBI reports that the US burglary rate reported to police fell from 731.7 per 100,000 people in 2006 to 193.6 in 2025, about 74% lower (calc). You can focus on the doors, keys and daily habits within your control.

Your access plan cannot explain or prevent every kind of shrink. The NRF figures describe retail shrink, not losses caused by keys. You can still make each departure easier to handle by recording who holds a credential and withdrawing access when their role ends.

Your service questions

How does a master key system work?

A master key system lets designated keys open selected doors, while a master key opens the planned group. We design the access arrangement around your building.

Can employees have different access levels?

Yes, we plan key access around the doors each person needs. We review the layout and your key-control goals with you.

Can my existing locks be part of a master key system?

That depends on compatibility and the condition of the hardware. We inspect the locks before recommending a plan.

What happens when an employee loses a key?

We help assess which doors are affected and whether rekeying is needed. Tell us which key was lost so we can discuss the appropriate scope.

Do master keys work for multiple buildings?

A planned system can cover compatible locks across the properties you control. We confirm the layout, hardware and access requirements before quoting.

How quickly can a locksmith arrive?

We confirm your current arrival estimate when you call. Traffic, your location and technician availability affect the estimate, so we confirm the current window when you call.
