Who should get through which door?

Your access control system connects an entry point with a decision about who can use it. A keypad may suit a home gate. Individual fobs may suit apartments or a workplace. Mobile credentials can fit your team when it needs access to change with a role. Start with your doors, users and daily routine, then decide whether you need schedules, entry records or a way to admit visitors remotely.

A credential is only one part of entry.

Your reader must work with the controller, lock, door and power arrangement. A video intercom helps you identify a visitor, while an electrified strike performs a different job at the door. The table separates these roles so you can compare them without assuming every device includes every feature. Ask which functions work locally, which depend on a network and who controls your administrator account.

Make departures and outages part of the plan.

You should be able to remove access when a person leaves and understand what happens if power or a network connection fails. Fail safe and fail secure describe the access side of a lock when power is removed. They do not settle every exit or fire requirement. Have the complete arrangement checked for your site. Your handover should cover credential removal, manual access and the person responsible for keeping permissions current.

Your gate needs safety and access planning. UL Solutions describes UL 325 as the gate-operator safety standard, while UL 294 complements it for access control system units. UL 325 does not evaluate gate access features for physical or cyber security. Ask how your proposed system addresses both roles.

Your security plan starts with good news. Burglary has fallen for decades. The FBI reports that the US burglary rate reported to police fell from 731.7 per 100,000 people in 2006 to 193.6 in 2025, about 74% lower (calc). You can focus on the doors, keys and daily habits within your control.

Your access plan cannot explain or prevent every kind of shrink. The NRF figures describe retail shrink, not losses caused by keys. You can still make each departure easier to handle by recording who holds a credential and withdrawing access when their role ends.

Your service questions

What is an access control system?

An access control system decides who can open a door, and when. It replaces or supports a metal key with a code, card, fob, phone or fingerprint, and it can keep a record of each entry.

Which type of access control fits my property?

It depends on your doors, how many people need entry and how often that list changes. We look at your doors and daily routine first, then explain the options in plain words.

What is the difference between fail safe and fail secure?

A fail safe lock unlocks when power is removed. A fail secure lock stays locked when power is removed. Your door type and local code decide which one applies, so we check before any work.

Can you add access control to a gate or an apartment building?

Yes. Keypads, intercoms and readers work on pedestrian gates, vehicle gates and shared entries. Call with your gate or door details so we can confirm what fits.

Do I still need good locks if I have access control?

Yes. Electronic entry controls who gets in. Solid hardware, a reinforced strike and the right cylinder keep the door closed against force. You want both working together.
