Is it the lock, or the door around it?
Your key may be hard to turn because the cylinder is worn. It may also be fighting a door that has shifted out of line. Replacing hardware without checking the fit can leave the same problem behind. Your lock installation starts with the latch, hinges, strike and frame. Tell us whether the problem occurs with the door open, shut or both, so your technician can trace the cause.
Read the grade in its proper context.
Your hardware grade describes tests for a specific product category. A commercial lever, residential deadbolt and exit device do different jobs, so their test cycles are not a league table of interchangeable locks. Match your use, door preparation and access needs to the right hardware. A strong cylinder does little for a loose strike. The whole assembly needs to close, latch and release as intended.
Leave with a door you can test yourself.
You can ask why replacement is needed, which parts are included and whether your existing keys can still be used. Discuss the finish and handle shape before ordering. At handover, close the door from its normal position, turn the key and check the inside release. Ask your technician to explain the care the hardware needs. Your daily use should feel smooth without pushing or pulling the door into place.
Good information.
Stronger decisions.
Your security plan starts with good news. Burglary has fallen for decades. The FBI reports that the US burglary rate reported to police fell from 731.7 per 100,000 people in 2006 to 193.6 in 2025, about 74% lower (calc). You can focus on the doors, keys and daily habits within your control.
| BHMA standard | Product | Top grade | Cycles tested | Force or loading test |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A156.2-2022 | Commercial knob or lever | Grade 1 (2022) | 1,000,000 (2022) | 10 pound axial load (2022) |
| A156.40-2025 | Residential deadbolt | Grade A (2025) | 400,000 (2025) | 1,350 pounds against the deadbolt (2025) |
| A156.3-2025 | Exit device | Grade 1 (2025) | 500,000 loaded cycles (2025) | No loss of operation in that test (2025) |
Your rating belongs to a product category, not every lock in a brand. BHMA Hardware Highlights describes the residential cycle test as a test of dead latches. Your door, frame and installation still have to work together.
You can start with the frame. Seattle Police recommends a deadbolt throw of at least 1 inch and 3 to 4 inch wood screws into the wall stud where the construction allows. Your door needs an assessment before longer screws or different hardware are fitted. A longer screw is useful only when it reaches sound support without damaging what sits behind your frame.
