Before you book, whose box is it?

Your mailbox can sit at your home while still being maintained under a different arrangement. A private box, a property-managed bank of boxes and USPS-maintained equipment do not share one replacement process. Check your lease, property manager or Post Office first. The ownership table below helps you choose the right starting point. Your authority over the customer compartment does not extend to the postal carrier’s access equipment.

A small lock still needs the right fit.

Your eligible replacement has to match the box and turn its latch correctly. A similar-looking cylinder may have a different body length, cam or mounting arrangement. Share the box type and what has happened to the key. If your lock sticks, avoid forcing it until it can be checked. The technician needs your approval and a clear scope before removing or replacing hardware.

Your lock is one part of mail care.

You can reduce avoidable exposure by collecting mail regularly and following postal guidance when you will be away. A new customer lock does not control every part of the mail system. If you suspect theft, report it through the appropriate postal channels. After eligible replacement work, try each new key, check that your compartment latches and store the spare where you can find it. Confirm who maintains the lock next time.

By the numbers

Good information.
Stronger decisions.

Your security plan starts with good news. Burglary has fallen for decades. The FBI reports that the US burglary rate reported to police fell from 731.7 per 100,000 people in 2006 to 193.6 in 2025, about 74% lower (calc). You can focus on the doors, keys and daily habits within your control.

Your first call depends on who maintains the box. USPS distinguishes its own boxes from property-managed equipment. Confirm your box with the Post Office or property manager before you book work. A locksmith should not assume your tenant key gives authority over postal equipment.

Your customer lock is distinct from postal collection-box equipment. USPS OIG reported 23,086 high-security collection boxes and 37,747 electronic locks installed as of September 2024, in its March 2025 report. Those national upgrades do not change who maintains your mailbox compartment.
