Who still has a key to your door?

Your move may be complete while the old access is still in place. A previous occupant, a contractor or a lost spare can leave a question you cannot answer. Rekeying changes the working key for a compatible cylinder. You keep the sound lock hardware and receive a different key. It is a practical choice when your concern is who can enter, rather than a broken door or worn mechanism.

How a rekey works

Your key lifts small pins inside the cylinder to the height that lets its plug turn. During a rekey, the technician changes the pin arrangement to fit another key. Your former key then has the wrong pattern. The cutaway below shows the pin-and-key relationship, not a promise that every lock has the same construction. Worn cylinders, incompatible keyways and damaged doors need their own assessment.

Make your new key plan easy to keep.

You can ask whether your compatible doors can work from a shared key. Bring every door into the scope, including the entry you rarely use. Ask how your new keys will be counted and handed over, then test them with the technician. If your property has a master key plan, explain it before work begins. A change to one cylinder should fit your wider access plan.

How a rekey works

Your new pin arrangement matches a new key. Your old key no longer lifts the pins to the turning line.

1. Key goes in

Your key slides into the plug. Each cut sits beneath its matching key pin.

2. Pins lift

Your key lifts the key pins and the driver pins against their springs.

3. Pins meet the shear line

The gaps between the key pins and driver pins line up with the shear line between plug and housing.

4. Plug turns

No driver pin crosses the shear line. Your key can now turn the plug.

Rekey: new key pins match a new key, the old key no longer lines up.

By the numbers

Good information.
Stronger decisions.

Your security plan starts with good news. Burglary has fallen for decades. The FBI reports that the US burglary rate reported to police fell from 731.7 per 100,000 people in 2006 to 193.6 in 2025, about 74% lower (calc). You can focus on the doors, keys and daily habits within your control.

Your simple checks still matter. Close your doors, use working locks and know who can open them. The FBI no-force category does not tell you whether someone used a door, a window or an existing key. You can review your own access without assuming a cause the data does not establish.

Your move or change of tenant is a practical time to count working keys. Rekeying changes the pin arrangement in a compatible cylinder. It does not repair a damaged frame or make every lock compatible with one key. Ask your technician which cylinders can be rekeyed together, then test every new key before putting your spares away.

How long does it take to rekey a lock?

The time depends on the lock and how many doors need service. We explain the likely work window after checking your hardware.
